* On December 27th mayor-elect Greg Neffinger along with councilors Sweeney, Mancini and Condon met with the Environmental Committee for approximately 2 hours. Various Mittineague Park and Bear Hole issues were discussed such as, but not limited to: land preservation for Bear Hole, Mittineague Park upkeep, enforcement and ordinance issues for both the park and Bear Hole, vandalism and illegal hunting within both locations and how to make both Bear Hole and Mittineague Park more user friendly. Concept of expanding the town's recycling program was discussed as well. The Environmental Committee requested this meeting as an ice breaker with the town's new leadership and to obtain insight as to what Mayor Neffinger's vision is for environmental issues within West Springfield. The meeting was very positive and we look forward to a positive working relationship with the mayor and his staff.
* The Mittineague Park trail maintenance crew continues to work on clearing the park's trails of tree debris that resulted from the October 29, 2011 nor'easter. This effort continues to be a work in progress.
* Volunteers from the Environmental Committee and the committee's Mittineague Park Trail Maintenance Crew teamed up on January 7th with the Appalachian Mountain Club to help clear a small area of "Section 4" of the M & M Trail in Bear Hole of general trail hazards as well as tree debris from October 29th's nor'easter. 3.5 hours were volunteered helping to maintain the Bear Hole section of the trail as a user friendly resource.
